ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals exploded for eight runs in the third inning on the way to a 13-1 pasting of Milwaukee in the first game of a weekend series at Busch Stadium.
There were no home runs, but centerfielder John Jay pounded three hits and leftfielder Matt Holliday matched that output. The Cardinals knocked Brewer ace Yovani Gallardo around again. He took the loss and he has lost nine of 10 regular season decisions against St. Louis. Jay and Matt Carpenter both knocked in two runs in the big inning as the Cardinals sent a dozen men to the plate.
Milwaukee had jumped to a 1-0 first-inning lead on singles by Nyjer Morgan, Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez. The lead didn’t last long and the Brewers took their third defeat in five games.
Jake Westbrook picked up his third win for St. Louis, while lowering his earned run average to 1.30. He allowed seven hits, the single run and no walks in seven innings on the mound.
