Packers bringing in former Falcon for their rookie camp

GREEN BAYThe Packers will get a look at the N-C-A-A’s all-time leading receiver during Green Bay’s rookie camp May 11th-13th.

Michael Zweifel of Dubuque College will be one of about 30 non-drafted and unsigned players to try out for a couple of spots on the Packers’ 90-man summer roster. Zweifel was a two-time all W-IAC selection at UW-River Falls. And when his father Stan moved from UW-Whitewater to become the head coach at Dubuque, Michael joined him.

Last year as a senior, Michael caught 140 passes for 1,915 yards and 25 touchdowns. And he caught 436 passes in his four years at Dubuque and River Falls – a record for all NCAA divisions. Zweifel had a faster-than-average speed of six-point-five-two seconds in the three-cone drill at Iowa State’s Pro Day. Minnesota and Baltimore had expressed an interest, but neither drafted or signed him this past weekend. The Packers are also bringing in a couple players from Division III champion UW-Whitewater for tryouts – long snapper Casey Casper and punter Kris Rosholt. The Pack will also get a look at UW-Stout guard Tyler Butzler.

Veteran Packers’ corner Charles Woodson says he’s “very excited” that the team drafted defensive players with the first six picks. Woodson said it’s clear that the Packers drafted for what they needed, instead of just taking the best available players when they were on the clock. And Woodson – the NFL’s defensive player-of-the-year in 2010 – said the front office quote, “did a great job of bringing guys in that I think are going to help us right now.” Woodson said the fact that general manager Ted Thompson traded up three times to get defensive players means quote, “We’re going to win another championship. I don’t believe we needed much, but we got more than we needed and that’s even better.” The Packers hoped to take pressure off Clay Matthews by drafting outside linebacker Nick Perry from U-S-C with their first pick. Their second-through-sixth picks were Michigan State defensive end Jerel Worthy, Vanderbilt corner Casey Hayward, Iowa defensive tackle Mike Daniels, Maine safety Jerron McMillian, and N-C State linebacker Terrell Manning. The Packers used their final two picks on offense with Florida State tackle Andrew Datko and Tennessee-Chattanooga quarterback B.J. Coleman.
