Wisconsin made three-and-a-half percent more cheese in March than the year before. But the increase fell just short of the national hike of 3.7 percent.

Still, Wisconsin extended its lead over California as the nation’s top cheese-maker. The Golden State raised its production by 2.9 percent from the year before, to almost 199-million pounds. But Wisconsin put out 237-million pounds.

The state’s Cheddar production was up by over 10-percent, with American cheese up nearly six-percent and Italian cheese up by almost three-and-a-half percent. Third-place Idaho made about four-percent more cheese in March, and New York’s output was up 16-percent.
