Local Lion has ex-school nurse to thank for sight

Prevention is a big part of a school nurse’s job.

Former Ellsworth School District Nurse Bernice Schneider-Kiene was doing that job back when Chuck Kreye was a kindergartner. Today, Kreye can still see because Schneider-Kiene took action.

It happened when the then-first-year school nurse set out to do vision testing with the students. She chose the former Sunnyside Elementary School as the place to start.

“Chuck was one of the first kids whose test I did,” she said.
