CHICAGO - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirms the electronic barrier network near Chicago, designed to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes, went dead for about 13 minutes earlier this week.
Engineers are trying to determine why the power outage happened Wednesday morning just before 1 a.m. Two barriers failed. Backup generators fired up, but failed to deliver electricity to the barriers due to a power surge.
Workers manually reset a circuit breaker to make sure the barriers were working.
There is no indication any invasive species got past the barriers during the outage.
