State Sports Briefs: UW-RF qualifies for the NCAA Division III softball tourney
Wisconsin Sports-- U-W River Falls won the W-I-A-C softball tournament with an 8-4 victory over Whitewater in the final game yesterday in Eau Claire.
U-W River Falls won the W-I-A-C softball tournament with an 8-4 victory over Whitewater in the final game yesterday in Eau Claire. Ashley Goettl hit a solo homer and a single for River Falls. Rose Tusa earned a complete game victory, giving up four runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts. She's now 23-and-6. Morgan Krisch went 2-for-2 with a double and two R-B-I's for Whitewater, which suffered its first loss earlier yesterday in the double-elimination tournament with a 4-1 defeat to River Falls, which started the day with one loss. River Falls earned the W-I-A-C's automatic berth in the N-C-A-A Division-Three tourney, which begins May 18th. Bids will be announced next week.

Saint Norbert won its third Midwest Conference softball title in four seasons yesterday, with a 2-to-1 victory over Carroll in eight innings. Morgan Buboltz hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to win it. Morgan Rusch went all the way for the win, giving up a run on 12 hits. The victory came after Carroll had beaten Saint Norbert 6-to-2 earlier in the day to stay alive in the double-elimination tourney. Saint Norbert now advances to the N-C-A-A Division-Three tournament.

The Green Bay Gamblers advanced to the title round of the U-S junior hockey league playoffs with a 2-to-1 victory at Indiana yesterday. Nicholas Schilkey scored the game-winner on a power play goal with 12:16 left, as the Gamblers swept Indiana three-games-to-none. Green Bay became the first team in U-S league history to enter the Clark Cup championship round in three straight years.
