Minnesota Sports Briefs: Lynx win preseason opener
Minnesota Sports-- The defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx held on to win their first exhibition game of the preseason 87-85 last night at Connecticut.
(Uncasville, CT) -- The defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx held on to win their first exhibition game of the preseason 87-85 last night at Connecticut.
The Lynx let a halftime lead slip away and needed to outscore the Sun by four in the fourth quarter to earn the win. Seimone Augustus led Minnesota scorers with 12 points. The Lynx play their second and final preseason game on Tuesday. They will host Chicago in a game to be played at the U of M Sports Pavilion at noon.

Former Timbewolves star and current Celtics standout Kevin Garnett poured in 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as the Celtics put away the Hawks with an 83-80 series-clinching victory in Game Six of their quarterfinal set. Garnett took umbrage with being called the dirtiest player in the NBA. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday that Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. called Garnett, quote, "the dirtiest guy in the league." Garnett fired back last night, saying the comment was rude and it gave him extra motivation in last night's win.

The United States men's hockey team skated by Belarus yesterday 5-3 in a pool play game in the 2012 World Championship Tournament in Helsinki, Finland. The Americans are 3-1 so far in pool play and will play three more pool games, including a contest this morning against Kazakhstan at 8:15 a.m. The Team USA roster has six Minnesotans, including John Curry of Shorewood, Justin Braun of Minneapolis, Alex Goligoski of Grand Rapids, J.T. Brown of Burnsville, Kyle Okposo of St. Paul, and Justin Faulk of South St. Paul.

27-year-old Clayton Stoner signed a new, two-year contract with the Minnesota Wild yesterday. The defenseman collected five points in 54 minutes last season with the Wild. He ranked third on the club in plus-minus rating and penalty minutes. Next season will be his fourth with Minnesota.

The Minnesota Wild and their AHL affiliate Houston Aeros have entered into an agreement with the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL to help develop players. Last season, Houston used 19 players from the ECHL and the Wild had four players with ECHL experience skate in a game last season. Orlando is entering its first season as a member of ECHL. The team will use the nickname "Solar Bears" and play at the Amway Center, the same facility used by the NBA's Orlando Magic.

The Dallas Stars hired Bob Gainey as their new senior advisor to the hockey department on Thursday. The 58-year-old Gainey returns for his second stint with the Stars organization, dating back to when the team was located in Minnesota. He was the club's head coach from 1990-1996, and served as GM of the team from 1992-2002. Gainey was the architect in leading the Stars franchise to seven consecutive playoff berths, five division titles, two Stanley Cup Finals appearances and the 1999 Stanley Cup championship.

Wayzata's Tim Herron shot a two-under-par-70 in yesterday's opening round of the PGA Golf Tournament Players Championship in Florida. That places the veteran in a tie for 28th place entering second round action today. Ian Poulter and Martin Laird are atop the leader after firing seven-under-par-65's yesterday.

The ARCA Racing Series is scheduled to make its first-ever visit to Minnesota next month. ARCA is in its 60th season of auto racing at short tracks across the country and is generally considered one of the better programs for young stock car drivers to learn the ropes of racing. Many ARCA drivers have gone on to star in the highest levels of NASCAR competition. Elko Speedway will host a 200-lap main event on Saturday, June 2nd at 8 p.m. Discounted tickets are currently available at area Menard's stores.

Union Rags will not be running in the 137th Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 19th. Trainer Michael Matz said Union Rags will compete in the Belmont Stakes on June 9th in New York. Union Rags came in seventh at the Kentucky Derby. Matz said there will probably be a change in jockeys.
