PONTE VERDA BEACH, Fla. - Three Wisconsin golfers all struggled yesterday in their first rounds at The Players Championship.
Pewaukee native Mark Wilson had the best round of the three at two-over-par 74 – and he’s tied for 100th among the 139 still in field. Steve Stricker of Madison, who’s Number-six in the World Golf Rankings, is 121st at the un-official “fifth major.” He shot a four-over-par 76 at TPC Sawgrass. And after three bogeys, Stricker shot a seven on the par-five 16th. Jerry Kelly of Madison went 10-over yesterday at 82. He’s now in last place at 139th, after four other players withdrew – two of them after their first rounds.
Ian Poulter and Martin Laird are the first round leaders, both at seven-under.
