PRESCOTT--Congratulations to the Fifth Grade Math Masters Team at Malone Elementary School in Prescott, as they did very well in the annual Math Masters Tournament in New Richmond on April 27.

Cardinal Time Extension Teacher, Mrs. Kelly Johnson, from Malone coached the three teams attending this event. A total of 28 teams from around the western part of Wisconsin participated individually and as teams on eight sets of mathematical problems in this competition. Malone’s teams placed as follows:

--The team of Carson Stenroos, Hunter Daymond, Makenzie Huppert, Christian Timmins and Sydney Neisius-Skordahl placed fifth.

--Nathan Wolf, Abigail Magliano, Lexie Taylor, Caden Fisher and

Jonah Anderson placed seventh.

--Emily Pederson, Nolan Rohl, Cobb Hubbard, Carter Jansen and

Mackenzie Carey placed ninth.

One hundred thirty-four students attended this competition. High scorers were:

--Emily Pederson – tied for 13th in Fact Drill.

--Carter Jansen – tied for 16th in Fact Drill.

--Nathan Wolf – tied for 17th in Fact Drill.

--Carson Stenroos and Abigail Magliano – tied for 18th in Fact Drill.

--Carson Stenroos - 18th in Individual Problem Solving Round.

--Emily Pederson - 29th in Individual Problem Solving Round.

--Lexie Taylor – 32nd in Individual Problem Solving Round.

Math Masters of Minnesota began as a fifth grade math competition program in 1989 with teams from 44 schools taking part. In 1995, the competition was expanded to include sixth graders and, this year, there are approximately 5,000 fifth and sixth graders registered to compete.

Schools are encouraged to involve as many of their fifth and sixth grade students as possible in the use of the Math Masters packet of challenge preparation materials. A team selection test is provided to assist coaches in choosing students to represent their schools. Math Masters is designed to promote excellence in critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities as well as provide recognition to students for academic effort and achievement.

Teams from private as well as public schools may compete in Math Masters. The support of companies and foundations for this math competition is essential. Contributing corporations include The Hormel Foundation and IBM as well as other individual and business contributors.
