EPC makes its bid for D-SC girls title at conference meet

Conference track and field meets are this afternoon throughout the state and in this area the Dunn-St. Croix meet will be at Boyceville and Middle Border Conference tracksters will meet in Osceola.
Tuesday Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet in Boyceville. St. Croix Central looks to be the big favorite to win the boys’ side while the struggle for the girls’ title will include several teams include both Spring Valley and Elmwood/Plum City along with Colfax, SCC and Elk Mound.
EPC head coach Sue Thompson is both excited but also nervous knowing the squads has its best chance the co-op program has ever had to winning the league title in what will be a very competitive meet.
"We are in a situation where we will have multiple scorers in many events," Thompson said. "It's the kind of depth we usually have never had in this meet and now we do."
Thompson said EPC has sacrificed a few athletes in the relays to add strength to the individual events. She says field events could be decisive in the outcome.
"Our kids need to have very good days in those events because the competition will be tough."
Top county athletes in this year's D-SC meet are Spring Valley's Breanna Colbenson, Sam O'Brien, Rex Gould, Conner Sieracki and Kyle Bosshart along with EPC's Seth Jones, Elaina Danzinger, Marah Boyer, Jessica Olson, Sam Gilles, and Becky Hartung and Heather Von Holtum,
St. Croix Central is the defending boys champion and Mondovi its defending girls champ. Defending champs in the Middle Border are New Richmond for boys and Osceola for girls. Both of those two schools are the favorites in both meets with Somerset a contender in the girls competition and Ellsworth, Somerset and Prescott vying for the title also in the boys' meet.
One of the defending individual champs in the MBC meet from Pierce County is Ellsworth's Abbey Ristow. The Panther senior has recovered fast from a knee injury suffered during basketball season and thrown the discuses well enough to be a favorite again. She threw 121 feet to win the Baldwin-Woodville Invitational last week.
"She's worked very hard to get back to the form she was at a year ago," EHS head girls track coach Craig Olson said. "She has had to do a lot of physical therapy and work with doctors and trainers and she has to throw with a knee brace but it hasn't stop her. She keeps throwing in practice and on her own and the end result is where's she at now."
Other top county athletes looking for firsts in the MBC meet are Ellsworth's Lydia Kuhl, Alex Campbell, Brett Freier and Matt Priest along with Prescott's Sam Smith, Autumns Stees, Victoria Simones, Matt Pechacek and Cole Hauenstein.
