Minnesota Sports Briefs: Vikings training camp begins July 26
Minnesota Sports-- The Minnesota Vikings are scheduled to report to training camp in Mankato on Thursday July 26th.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings are scheduled to report to training camp in Mankato on Thursday July 26th.
The first practice on the Minnesota State campus is July 27th and the team will break camp August 16th. This will be the 47th straight year that the Vikings have had a presence in Mankato. Last year's training camp was shortened a few days because of the NFL lockout. The annual event generates an estimated five-million dollars for the Mankato-area economy.

The Vikings signed defensive end Nick Reed yesterday. Reed appeared in five games with the Bears and Buccaneers last season. He had six tackles. Meanwhile, the Vikes also claimed tackle Kevin Murphy off waivers and released offensive lineman Jose Valdez.

The United States men's hockey team begins championship bracket play in the 2012 World Hockey Championships in Helsinki, Finland this morning. The Americans will take on the host Finland club at 10:30 a.m. The U.S. beat Finland 5-0 in pool play on Sunday. The Team USA roster includes goaltender John Curry of Shorewood, defensemen Justin Braun of Minneapolis, Justin Faulk of South St. Paul, and Alex Goligoski of Grand Rapids, as well as forwards J.T. Brown of Burnsville and Kyle Okposo of St. Paul. Wild star Mikko Koivu and Wild prospect Mikael Granlund play for Finland.

The National Lacrosse League announced that Minnesota Swarm players Jordan MacIntosh and Evan Kirk have been named the 2012 All-Rookie Team. Both were first round draft choices in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft The Swarm advanced to the West Division Finals in the postseason, eventually losing to Edmonton.

Kentucky Derby winner "I'll Have Another" will break from the ninth gate in the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. "I'll Have Another" enters the Preakness looking to take a step closer to becoming the first horse to win the Triple Crown since 1978. "I'll Have Another" was installed as a 5-to-2 shot. The morning-line favorite is "Bodemeister", who finished second in the Derby. "Bodemeister" will break from the seventh post and the three-year-old's odds are 8-to-5. Eleven horses will compete in Saturday's race.

The Olympic flame will be passed on to British dignitaries today ahead of next month's London 2012 games. A delegation including Princess Anne and David Beckham will accept the historic torch in a special ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece. The flame will then be flown to the UK tomorrow to begin its eight-thousand-mile journey to the Olympic Park in London, where it will light the Olympic Stadium cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games on July 27th. The torch was lit May 10th in a special ceremony at the site of the original ancient games in Olympia.
