WIAA baseball and softball regional tournaments begin next week and the pairings for Divisions 2-4 were released yesterday.
Both No. 1 Prescott and Ellsworth were given No. 1 seeds in their respective regional tourneys. Both will have first round byes and won't play their first tournament game until after Memorial Day.
Ellsworth will be a No. 1 seed in a Division 2 regional. They will host the winner of the Durand/Baldwin-Woodville contest Tuesday, May 29 at Brown Field in Hager City. They will also host the regional final on May 30 if they win. Other teams in the regional include No. 3 seed Bloomer and No. 6 St. Croix Central with the winner facing the No. 2 seed Altoona, who is ranked No. 7 in the state D-2 poll. The sectional is in Barron on June 5.
Prescott, the state's top team in Division 3, has the top spot in its Division 3 regional and will face either No. 4 seeded Eau Claire Regis or No. 5 Colfax on May 29 at Firehall Field in Prescott. They will also host the regional final which may mean a match up with No. 3 Boyceville. The Bulldogs have the second seed in the tourney. They will face either No. 3 seed Elk Mound or No. 6 Spring Valley. That game will be played Friday, May 25 in Elk Mound. The sectional is in Cumberland on June 5.
In Division 4, Elmwood also has a first round-bye in its regional as the No. 1 seed. They will play the winner of the No. 4 Plum City vs. No. 5 Clear Lake game, which will be on May 25 at Legion Park in Plum City. The other teams in the regional are No. 2 Alma/Pepin and No. 3 Glenwood City. Elmwood will host the regional finals if it makes it there and the winner would advance to the sectional in Bruce on June 5.
Ellsworth's softball team has a No. 3 seed in its tough regional bracket and plays host to No. 6 St. Croix Central next Thursday, May 24. The winner faces either No. 2 Bloomer or No. 7 Somerset on Tuesday, May 29. The regional final is at the highest remaining seed's home field which could well be the state's top-ranked, Baldwin-Woodville. The sectional semifinals are in Hammond on June 4 and the sectional final game will be played in Rice Lake on June 7.
Prescott and Spring Valley/Plum City are in the same regional in Division 3. PHS is the No. 3 seed and hosts No. 6 Boyceville next Thursday while the same day SV/PC will be in Eau Claire to take on Regis at Gelein Field in Carson Park. The Cardinals are the No. 5 seed and the Ramblers No. 4. If Prescott wins they will play at No. 2 seed Colfax May 29th while No. 1 seed Elk Mound would play either Spring Valley/PC or Regis the same day in Elk Mound. The sectional semifinal is in Fall Creek June 4th and the sectional final is in Park Falls on June 7.
Finally, in Division 4, Elmwood is a No. 4 seed and will host Glenwood City, the No. 5 seed, next Thursday. If the Raiders win they play the No. 1 seed, Cornell on May 29 in Cornell. The other semifinal will pit No. 3 seeded Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran against No. 2 seed Chippewa Falls McDonell. The sectional semifinal is in Chippewa Falls June 4 and the sectional final is at Gilman on June 7.
