Elmwood nine clinches tie for D-SC Small title, SV still in contention

Whatever Spring Valley High School's baseball team does or doesn't do really doesn't matter as far as Elmwood is concerned. The Raiders clinched a tie for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference Small Division title Thursday after beating Plum City 12-3 at home while Valley was beaten by No. 3 ranked Boyceville 11-0.

The Raiders clinched their first conference title in baseball since 1999 finally kicking-into gear after a slow start against the Blue Devils (They trailed 2-1 after two and a half innings). They tied the game in their at bats in the third then plated six runs in the fourth to take command.

EHS had 13 hits in the game led by Logan Wolf's three. Josh Wells hit a double and Levi Wolf cracked a lead-off triple in the sixth he eventually scored on after one David Rhy's two RBIs. Wolf and Eli Fredrickson both drove two runs as well. Five Red and Black label players scored twice.

Logan Wolf was the winning pitcher. Although he gave up eight hits he also struck out 12 PC batters. The Blue Devils were led in hitting by Chad Fox, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with pair of doubles. Lawton Radle also doubled and Austin Coss had a pair of hits and two runs scored as well.

Elmwood completes D-SC Small play with a record of 8-5. They are in action again this afternoon as they host Durand at 5 p.m. at Raider Field. Also playing, just up Hwy. 128, is Spring Valley at Syverson Park. The Cardinals play a make-up doubleheader against Glenwood City and need to win both games plus beat Mondovi in another rescheduled league game Monday at home to clinch a share of the conference title for the second season in a row.

Valley was held to just two hits and saw 13 of its batters struck out by Boyceville pitcher Ryan Bloom in six innings of play. Jon Newton had one of those hits for the Cardinals, a double. Spring Valley also hurt itself with four errors.

The Cards drop to 5-5 in the league and 7-8 overall.
