MINNEAPOLIS -- The WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx open the regular season with a Sunday home game against Phoenix.

The team will receive their championship rings in a pregame ceremony and a banner will be hung at the Target Center. The game will be televised nationally on ABC and tips off at 11:30 a.m.

Two Minnesota Lynx players appeared at the downtown Minneapolis YMCA to help take part in the FIT clinic this morning. The FIT clinic promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices for youth. Devereaux Peters and Jessica Adair are scheduled to demonstrate some fun exercises to help kids get excited about fitness. The players will also give tips about healthy eating habits.

The University of Minnesota baseball team lost at Illinois 7-5 in Big Ten play last night. The Gophers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead, but allowed two eighth inning Illinois runs and lost. The Golden Gophers are now 28-26 on the season and 10-12 in league play. Minnesota and Illinois play again tonight at 6:05 p.m. and tomorrow at 12:05 p.m.

The Minnesota Vikings have waived offensive lineman Kevin Murphy and cornerback C.C. Whitlock. The Vikes claimed Murphy off waivers on Tuesday following his release from the Niners. Whitlock was an undrafted free agent singing out of South Carolina.

Wayzata's Tim Herron carded an opening round even par-70 yesterday at the Byron Nelson Championship in suburban Dallas. Burnsville native Cameron Beckman shot a two-over-par-72 to start the tourney. Ryan Palmer is alone atop the leaderboard after firing a six-under-par-64 yesterday. Round two is set for today.

The Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs picked up big wins in the NBA playoffs last night. In Indiana, the Pacers rolled to a 94-75 win over the Miami Heat in Game Three of their semifinal series. The Pacers took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven set with the victory. Dwyane Wade had only five points on 2-and-13 shooting in the loss. In San Antonio, the Spurs slammed the Los Angeles Clippers, 105-88. The top-seeded Spurs improved to 6-and-0 in this year's postseason by grabbing a 2-0 lead in the seven-game semifinal series.

University of Minnesota Golden Gophers recruit Taylor Cammarata has been named the USHL Rookie of the Year. Cammarata had 27 goals and 42 assists in 60 games with the Waterloo Black Hawks this season.

The Los Angeles Kings are now just a win away from the Stanley Cup Final. The Kings skated to a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes in Game Three of the Western Conference finals on Thursday. Los Angeles improved to 11-1 in this year's playoffs with the victory. The Kings can put the seven-game series away with a win Game Four on Sunday. No playoff games are on the schedule Friday night. The Eastern Conference finals between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils will resume with Game Three on Saturday. That series is tied at a game apiece.

The Edmonton Oilers are parting ways with head coach Tom Renney. Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini announced the team has decided not to renew Renney's contract. The Oilers went 57-85-22 during Renney's tenure. Edmonton holds the top overall pick in this year's NHL draft.

Despite winning the Kentucky Derby, "I'll Have Another" is not the favorite for Saturday's 137th Preakness Stakes. Derby runner-up "Bodemeister" is the 8-to-5 morning line choice heading into the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown. "I'll Have Another" is the second favorite at 5-to-2. The colt overtook "Bodemeister" in the final furlong at Churchill Downs to win the "Run for the Roses." "Bodemeister" will break from gate seven, while "I'll Have Another" starts from gate nine. Eleven three-year-olds are entered in the mile-and-three-sixteenths race. Post time is at 5:18 p.m. "Affirmed" remains the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.
