GRANTSBURG - DNR officials comfirmed late last week a spill into the St. Croix River came from a sand mine located outside Grantsburg.
The spill was noticed by a hiker in late April and the report of the DNR's preliminary investigation into it was released last week.
The report stated that the hiker spotted milky, cream-colored water in a creek that flowed into the St. Croix. The investigation traced this back to the 72-acre sand mine owned by Tiller Corp. of Maple Grove, Minn. The investigation found the spill was caused by a leak in one of the mine's holding ponds.
More investigations by the DNR and by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Burnett County and the National Park Service.
