UPDATED: Two killed near Prescott were from Stillwater, Minn.

Pierce County sheriff's deputies and the State Patrol reports that two people killed in a two-vehicle accident head-on accident south of Prescott late Sunday afternoon were from Stillwater, Minn. The driver of the second car remained in critical condition Monday at Regions Hospital.

The State Patrol has identified the couple killed in a head-on accident south of Prescott Sunday as Richard E. Skare, 72, and Irene Ruth Skare, 71, both of Stillwater, Minn.

The Skares were northbound on Hwy. 35, just north of Pierce County Highway QQ when they collided with a southbound 1994 Chevrolet Lumina being driven by Randy J. Tape, 51, of Prescott. Tape and his passenger, Tammy A. Decker, 53, of Hastings, Minn., were both transported by medical helicopters to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

A spokeswoman for Regions said late Monday morning that Tape was in critical condition but no information was available about Decker.

The Skares were driving a 2008 Chevrolet Malibou.

The accident, described as a head-on collision by personnel at the scene,occurred at 4:29 p.m.

Responding agencies included Prescott Ambulance and Fire and two paramedics from Ellsworth. Pierce County Highway Department personnel were summoned to assist with the lengthy road closure and resulting detours.

The accident remains under investigation by the State Patrol.
