Packer prez Murphy possible new AD at Stanford
Wisconsin Sports-- There’s a report that Green Bay Packers’ president Mark Murphy is a possible candidate to become the new athletic director at Stanford University. But a Packers’ spokesman called it “simply speculation” yesterday, and there’s no basis to it.
GREEN BAY - There’s a report that Green Bay Packers’ president Mark Murphy is a possible candidate to become the new athletic director at Stanford University. But a Packers’ spokesman called it “simply speculation” yesterday, and there’s no basis to it.
The San Francisco Chronicle said Murphy was quote, “an interesting name that has popped up in the rumor mill” in the search for a new Stanford AD. Murphy was reportedly a candidate for the post in 2006, when Bob Bowlsby was hired. Now, Bowlsby is about to leave on June 15th when he becomes the new commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.
Murphy was the athletic director at Northwestern at the time. He became the Packers’ president in late 2007. The 56-year-old Murphy has spent 16 years as an administrator in college athletics. He’s also been an assistant director of the NFL players’ union, and he played for the Washington Redskins for eight years.
