SPRING VALLEY - Spring Valley High School's Baseball team overcame a mid-season slump to successfully defend its Dunn-St. Croix Conference Small Division title after beating Mondovi 4-3 Monday at Suverson Park.
The win was the Cardinals fifth out of their last six ballgames. The late season run, which began as a rally down 4-1 to Alma/Pepin back on May 10, helped SV win its second straight title after winning a rescheduled contest over the Buffaloes.
Valley had the initial advantage leading 2-1 after three innings. They responded when Mondovi plated two runs in the top of the sixth to the contest at 3-3 with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Troy Rudesill pitched the whole way to get the win. He held the Buffs' to just one hit while striking out six batters.
Spring Valley's top hitters were Gabe Verges and Zach Newton, both with two.
Despite being the D-SC Small co-champs, Spring Valley only has the No. 6 seed in their bracket of the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament. They play a first round-game at Elk Mound Friday starting at 5 p.m.
