Parker Hines was sitting in a math class last year when he heard a presentation on actuarial science, the practice that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in the insurance and finance industries.

Hines, who loved business and math classes, was intrigued.

“It sounded good to me,” said the son of Wally and Lisa Hines. The Ellsworth native wanted to learn more about the industry and will make it his area of study at UW-Madison this fall.

Hines will be one of 137 students to walk across the stage Friday night to accept his degree. As salutatorian, he will also be giving a speech.

“I was surprised I got salutatorian,” he said. “I didn’t think I was going to get it.” As for the speech, he explained the most difficult part is making sure it’s not all about himself.

At the same time, excuse him if he does mention some of his exploits because there were many.

The top of the list has to be this past winter when Hines won a State Individual Wrestling Championship in the Division 2, 195-pound class. The championship was even sweeter after losing out in the state finals in overtime the previous year.
