SPOONER - Burning restrictions were lifted overnight in far northwest Wisconsin, where dry fallen trees from last summer are still on the ground.
The DNR had a ban in place for a-month-and-a-half on all outdoor fire-related activities in parts of Burnett, Washburn, Polk, and Douglas counties. It got so dry there in the spring, officials feared that even a smoldering cigarette could ignite a wildfire that could race through the region. But now, forestry officials say the area has received enough rain – and the remaining trees have greened to the point in which the fire risk is reduced. So the DNR lifted the burning restrictions at 12:01 this morning – but they still urged people to use extreme caution with fire in the wilderness.
A quarter-million acres of trees fell in far northwest Wisconsin last summer due to a heavy windstorm. Many parts of those trees have still not been removed.
