Glen Nelson is still at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, but is now a patient in its rehabilitation center, a relative said last week.
“He continues to improve and is doing pretty good,” the relative said. “He can now sit up in his bed and, when he needs to move, he gets around in a portable chair.”
The next step, the relative continued, will be removing the restrictions on his hands, so he could start exercising them.
“All the pins are out and the hands are healing,” he said.
Nelson was northbound on CTH J in the Town of Martell around 8:11 p.m. that night when he collided with a southbound truck, operated by George Budd, 54, Beldenville. Budd was attempting to turn into his driveway and told law enforcement he didn’t see Nelson. Glen and wife Julie, who was his passenger, were ejected. Budd was uninjured.
Both Nelsons were transported to Regions Hospital. Julie died the next morning. Budd was cited for operating while under the influence.
The relative also praised the community support from the Hammond/Roberts area. A local 4-H outfit held a garage sale which raised nearly $3,000 for the family, along with a community walk, with totalled $1,500.
“We’ve had a great turnout from the community,” he said.
