EAU CLAIRE - Six errors proved costly to the Elmwood High School softball team as they lost in the WIAA Division 4 regional finals to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 7-1 Thursday at Gelein Field.
Raider pitcher McKayla Brunner struck out eight Lancer batters and did the best she could to keep Immanuel in check on offense. But ECIL changed their strategy in the middle innings to play small ball with bunts and slap singles which took advantage of Elmwood's shaky fielding.
A costly error in the fifth broke the game open. ECIL scored two runs off of it with two outs and led 4-1. With Elmwood struggling at the plate, the lead was almost insurmountable. The Lancers (10-12 overall) then added three more runs in the sixth and had as many hits as Elmwood had errors.
Katie Brunner scored Elmwood's lone run off an RBI-sacrifice by Heidi Webb. EHS had the bases loaded that inning but could not score another run and had two on a previous inning but could not plate a run.
The Raiders conclude their season at 5-19 overall.
