Fifth grader doesn’t let diabetes get in life’s way
By Bill Kirk
A typical 11-year-old, Erik Lange enjoys drawing, playing sports, taking physical education classes and going to recess at Ellsworth Middle School.
As a Type 1 Diabetic, the fifth grader must also spend time managing that condition. With over eight years of experience, Lange was confident last week he’s got his diabetes under control.
“There’s nothing I would never try,” he said after telling about looking forward to such summer camp activities as swimming, canoeing, kayaking and rock climbing, along with his school participation in baseball, basketball and football. He understood his condition would prohibit him from entering the military, being a firefighter or going sky diving, however, he added.
Another event he eagerly anticipates is The Faces of Diabetes, which will return after a year’s hiatus to Vino in the Valley in the Town of El Paso on Saturday, July 21.
