EPC girls relay team places second at state, EHS's Campbell 5th

Elmwood/Plum City's girls' 3200-meter relay team finished second at the WIAA State Track and Field Meet Friday afternoon only because the winner broke a state record at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

LA CROSSE - Elmwood/Plum City's girls' 3200-meter relay team finished second at the WIAA State Track and Field Meet Friday afternoon only because the winner broke a state record at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The EPC quartet of Heather Von Holtum, Elaina Danzinger, Morgan Sweeney and Becky Hartung finished in a time 9:46.78.

The problem was the team from Menasha St. Mary's broke the state Division 3 record with a time of 9:37.64.

Also placing Friday was Ellsworth's Alex Campbell. He finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, five inches. The winner was East Troy's Cody Zaeske with a leap of 46-7.

Prescott's 3200-meter girls relay team took eighth in a time of 9:47.57. Team members are Autumn Stees, Victoria Simones, Emily Bayer and Amanda Murphy. Platteville had the winning team in a 9:21.84 which nearly broke the state record.

Qualifying for tomorrow's finals were Spring Valley's Tyler O'Keefe and EPC's Seth Jones in the 400-meter dash. Their qualifying times were :52.68 seconds for Jones, who finished ninth, and :52.70 for O'Keefe who was 10th. The top 10 qualify for each event final Saturday. EPC's 800-meter relay also qualified, placing 10th in 1:49.52. Team members are Jessica Olson, Marah Boyer, Kaitlyn Lee and Sarah Gilles.

Other results from the day's action (up to 6:30 p.m.) for Pierce County athletes were Molly Green, Spring Valley, 16th in the long jump at 14-8; Sam O'Brien, Spring Valley, 14th in the 100-meter dash in :13.09; Kyle Bosshart, Spring Valley, 13th in the 100-meter dash; Rex Gould, Spring Valley, 15th in the 110-meter high hurdles in :16.47; Spring Valley's girls' 3200-meter relay team, 13th in 10:30.52; SV's 800-meter relay team, 17th in 1:51.33.
