Sunday State News Briefs: Madison sunbather hit by truck has died

MADISON - Madison police report the 38-year old sunbather hit by a city truck at James Madison Park last month has died.

The truck was driving on a grassy area at the park when it hit the woman. At first, police reported her injuries weren’t considered to be life-threatening, but her condition deteriorated. A crash reconstruction team from the Wisconsin State Patrol is trying to find out what the truck driver could have seen as she drove over a small hill and hit the woman on the ground. An autopsy was conducted yesterday.

The Federal Aviation Administration will cover $600,000 of the $800,000 thousand dollar cost for a new building at the Wausau downtown airport. The space will be used for fuel storage and a vehicle maintenance area. Airport officials say the new building offers the potential of an increase in airport revenue by opening up valuable hangar space which has been used for storage of snow removal equipment in the past. The new building is also expected to improve response time for refueling operations and snow removal.

Darius Simmons’ family says the 13 year old was in school when several thousand dollars worth of guns were stolen from a neighbor’s house. That neighbor, John Henry Spooner, is accused of shooting the teenager to death in front of his mother last Thursday. At a Saturday news conference, Simmons’ aunt said he was confronted by Spooner outside his home. When he denied stealing anything and put his hands in the air, the 75 year old man shot him in the chest. Spooner fired another shot as the boy ran away, but missed. Spooner is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death.
