Recyclables marketed by Pierce County center in ’11 dip

The amount of recyclable materials marketed by Pierce County’s recycling center dropped last year to the lowest level since 2008, according to the annual report from the county’s solid waste department.

This downturn was recorded despite two new recycling collection programs being established in 2011, along with a new collection site location.

Approximately 2,655 tons of recyclables were marketed last year, in contrast with the record high of 4,949 tons recorded a year earlier. The 2,294-ton decrease marked the lowest number of tons marketed since 3,087 tons were marketed in 2008.

Last year was comparable to ’08, in that the center experienced a sharp decline in the amount of materials delivered by private waste haulers.
