Pierce County teams make state baseball tournament

Ellsworth and Prescott High School baseball teams will advance to next week's state baseball tournament. The Pierce County squads both won sectional titles Tuesday afternoon.

Ellsworth defeated West Salem in the semifinals 4-1 and Somerset in the finals 5-1 in the Division 2 Barron Sectional. No.1 ranked Prescott needed eight innings to top Fall Creek 1-0 in the semifinals of the Division 3 Cumberland Sectional and they downed No. 5 Grantsburg 4-2.

The Panthers, 17-5 overall, will face the state's top ranked team, Racine St. Catherine's Wednesday next week, probably around 8:30 p.m. at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. It will be Ellsworth first ever trip to the state baseball tournament but for veteran head coach Steve Block it will his sixth trip to a state tournament He coached a runner-up in 1988 and a state champion in 1994.

Prescott will take on Oshkosh Lourdes/Oshkosh Valley Christian in the semifinals next Wednesday at around 3 p.m. For the Cardinals it will be their seventh trip to state and second under head coach Jeff Ryan, who led them to a state runner-up trophy back in 1999.
