Ellsworth got impressive pitching performances from its top two starters Tuesday, winning twice to advance to the WIAA Division 2 state tournament.
"Our pitching and defense make us a very dangerous team," EHS head coach Steve Block said before the tournament. "They make us a tough team to beat."
Junior James Georgakas struck out 10 in a complete-game 4-1 victory against West Salem in game one and senior Brady Schroeder punched out eight in seven innings for a 5-1 win against Somerset that sent the Panthers to the state tournament.
Georgakas held West Salem to four hits without issuing a walk and Ellsworth scored four runs in the sixth inning to pick up the win. West Salem made four errors.
Schroeder went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Panthers against West Salem and Georgakas added a double.
In game two, Schroeder kept Somerset to three hits and threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 28 hitters. Ellsworth scored four runs in the first three innings and added another in the sixth inning to pad the lead.
Sophomore Dennis Schutz led the Panthers with two hits to go along with an RBI and a stolen base. Schroeder went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Mitch Matter supplied a double and an RBI in the win.
