Prescott High School baseball team never let one bad inning or miss opportunities keep them from reaching their goal.
As the state's top ranked team in Division 3 Prescott received its fair set of challenges along the way to the WIAA State Baseball Tournament. And each time they met them head on and overcame them.
The Cardinals needed to go extra innings to win 1-0 over Fall Creek in the semifinals. PHS blew an opportunity in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs.
But eventually PHS got the clutch hit which always seem to be missing in previous playoff pursuits over the past decade. Mike Lytle nailed a single which scored the winning run and gave the win to pitcher Billy Brookshaw.
Prescott also escaped a jam in the top of the sixth. Fall Creek, 14-10 overall, loaded the bases but reliever Connor Loutsch, who came for Lytle after he gave up the first hit of the inning to the Crickets, made the final out with a strikeout.
Beside Lytle, only Jake Hintz and Brandon Keiper had hits for the Cards against FC.
No. 5 ranked Grantsburg, who beat Chequamegon in the first semifinal game, went ahead of the Cards 2-0 in their first at bats.
But PHS plated runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, showing their endurance despite the turnaround game on a very warm day at Islander Field.
Hintz came on for the win and Loutsch pitched the final two innings. Hintz gave up four hits but also struck out five batters. Lead-off batter Billy Brookshaw battered the Pirates, 23-3, with three hits and an RBI. Mike Brookshaw and Lytle added two hits and Aric Sandvig cracked an RBI-double.
