Prelim numbers show Minnesota's turkey harvest third-highest ever

ST. PAUL - The DNR says preliminary numbers show this spring's turkey harvest was the third-highest ever, with over 11,000 birds brought in and hunter success rate of 27 percent.

The agency's Steve Merchant says Minnesota's turkey population largely has rebounded from the severe winter of 2010-11 and last year's cold, wet spring.

Hunters purchased about 42,000 licenses this year, down from nearly 46,000 in 2011. Merchant says he suspects fewer licenses were sold because of last year's poor spring season.
