Sunday State Sports Briefs: Dekker hurt but Team USA wins in Tournament of the Americas

-- University of Wisconsin recruit Sam Dekker didn’t play due to an injury, but Team USA did just fine without the Sheboygan Lutheran star. Competing in the Tournament of the Americas in Brazil, Team USA started with 105-42 pasting of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

SAO SEBASTIAN DO PARASIO, BRAZIL - University of Wisconsin recruit Sam Dekker didn’t play due to an injury, but Team USA did just fine without the Sheboygan Lutheran star. Competing in the Tournament of the Americas in Brazil, Team USA started with 105-42 pasting of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Shaq Goodwin led USA scoring with 30 points in 19 minutes, hitting 12-of-12 from the floor. Jake Layman grabbed 10 rebounds and Nathaniel Britt handed out five assists. Team USA shot 59 percent, while the Virgin Islands missed 60 of 71 shots from the field.

The only driver in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race with a Wisconsin connection, Danica Patrick, slammed into the wall and finished 18th. Joe Logano was the winner for the fifth time in 11 starts this season. James Buescher was second. Patrick remains 11th in the points standings after the Alliance Truck Parts 250.

The track at Michigan International Speedway is fast because it has a new surface. That’s why Marcos Ambrose set a record of 203-point-241 miles per hour as he took the pole during qualifying. Kevin Harvick starts second. Cambridge native Matt Kenseth will start sixth, while Paul Menard of Eau Claire lines up in 18th and Travis Kvapil 42nd. Kenseth is the points leader coming in, leading Dale Earnhardt Jr. by 10.
