Morning State Sports Briefs: SIU's King to be new UW associate AD
Wisconsin Sports-- An official from Southern Illinois University was named today as a new associate athletic director at UW-Madison.
MADISON - An official from Southern Illinois University was named today as a new associate athletic director at UW-Madison.
Jason King will be in charge of all major and annual building projects in the Badgers’ athletic department. And he’ll serve as the department’s liaison to the UW’s Facilities Planning and Management department. King has spent the last 11 years as the head of facilities and game operations at Southern Illinois. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said he was impressed with King’s experience – and he looks forward to the leadership he can bring to the staff. King is the final new administrator to be hired at Madison, after several officials left in the past few months.

The United States won the Under-18 Americas’ tournament last night, crushing the host Brazil in the final game 81-to-56. Wisconsin Badgers’ recruit Sam Dekker of Sheboygan helped seal the victory with a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter and a baseline bucket to start the fourth. That was part of a 7-0 U.S. run which put the Americans up by 20 at that point. Dekker ended up with seven points in 14 minutes with two rebounds and a steal. The U.S. finished 5-0 in the tournament. Dekker missed Game-One with an injury, but he came back to average five points in the other games with two-and-a-half rebounds in just over 11 minutes per contest.

Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy was hoping that 6,600 new seats at Lambeau Field could be ready in time for this season’s playoffs – so there would be more crowd noise if Green Bay plays a home game in January. But Packers’ president Mark Murphy does not think it will happen. The extra seats are being installed vertically in the south end zone, and they were not scheduled to be ready until 2013. But the early spring has lengthened the construction season, and Murphy says it’s been helpful. Still, he says the project is not ahead of schedule. The structure for the new seats is up, and Murphy said the concept was to create a wall of sound to improve the Packers’ home-field advantage. Also, an observation deck is planned atop the seating in the north end zone – and it’s expected to be ready this season. New video boards and an elevator are also part of the $143-million stadium renovation, funded by the Packers and tens-of-thousands of new team stockholders. Murphy gave an update on the project to Milwaukee reporters yesterday, before he spoke to the city’s Jewish Federation.

An all-state honorable mention from the Fox Valley has committed to the UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team. Turner Botz of Little Chute says he’ll join the Phoenix in a year from now. The 6-6 Botz averaged just over 19-points a game for Little Chute in his junior year – and he plays AAU ball for the Wisconsin Playmakers. His AAU coach, Sean White, says Botz is a player who just wants to win. As the son of Little Chute’s district administrator, White said Botz has had the keys to the gym ever since he was little – and he has taken advantage of that. Botz was originally offered a partial scholarship at Green Bay – but after a solid AAU season, it was expanded to a full scholarship. And Botz says he’s grateful. He also received offers from Eastern Illinois, Army, Nebraska-Omaha, South Dakota State, and South Dakota.

Five Wisconsin players will compete in the PGA’s Professional National Championship which takes place from Sunday through next Wednesday in Seaside California. The state’s five participants are Charlie Brown of Sturtevant, Eddie Terasa of Waukesha, Rick Witt of Madison, Jim Schuman of Verona, and Ryan Helminen of Appleton. Three-hundred-12 players are in the field for the pro tournament.
