Spring Valley board limits cat ownership

SPRING VALLEY—Cats were an issue for the Spring Valley Village Board earlier this month.
There was discussion about several complaints about cats through the years. One resident with 17 cats has provoked a neighbor to call the village. Members noted concern about nine cats without licenses, a violation of village ordinance. Some members felt the resident should be given a grace period to pay for the licenses, while others felt the law was being broken and no consideration should be granted.
A suggestion was to limit the number of allowable cats to three, the same number allowed for dogs. There was also the possibility of a feral cat ordinance, which the village administrator agreed could be discussed with village counsel.
Trustees ultimately approved the proposed changes to the ordinance about cats, with Dale Jacobson voting against the motion, noting, “I have a problem with adding rules.” The ordinance will become law as soon as it is published.
