LA CROSSE - The EPA has reached settlement with a western Wisconsin utility over coal-fired power plants which were polluting the air.

La Crosse-based Dairyland Power Cooperative has agreed to spend about 156 million dollars in the settlement revealed online last week. Dairyland had been accused of failing to get the needed permit or install the best pollution control technology when it modified two plants starting eight years ago.

Dairyland will spend $150 million installing new pollution control devices and pay almost a million dollars in fines. The rest of the money will be spent on improving the environment and human health conditions around the plants.
