Wisconsin News-- The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to send a field staff to Wisconsin to assess possible damages. Governor Scott Walker’s office had asked the feds to declare an agricultural disaster in the state caused by unusual temperature patterns this spring.
MADISON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to send a field staff to Wisconsin to assess possible damages. Governor Scott Walker’s office had asked the feds to declare an agricultural disaster in the state caused by unusual temperature patterns this spring.
First it was unseasonably warm in the state, then when temperatures took a dive many cherries and apples which had flowered early were killed. Some projections suggest losses could approach 80 percent of the crop.
The federal declaration would make farmers eligible for low-interest loans. Walker sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack yesterday asking on behalf of all the impacted counties.
