Ellsworth junior legion team wins doubleheader

The Ellsworth Post 204 junior American Legion team swept a doubleheader in Brooklyn Park last Tuesday, June 26th.

They won the first game 5-2 and won the second game 9-1. Brady Yanish was the winning pitcher the first game and went four innings giving up zero runs on one hit and three walks with six strikeouts. Nick Taranto came in for the final three innings and gave up two runs. It was a 1-1 game going into the 6th inning, where we jumped on their new pitcher for 4 runs. Dennis Schutz led off the 6th with a triple, then 3 singles in a row from James Georgakas, Tyler Maxwell, and Isaac Hines. We were led offensively from Dan Giese, who went 3-3 and Dennis Schutz, who was 2-3 with a double and a triple. Tyler Maxwell also had two hits.

The second game Eric McGregor was the winning pitcher going three and two-third innings without giving up a hit. He was pulled for his pitch count and concern for the senior legion tournament this weekend. Eric struck out 6 and walked four giving up no runs. Luke Sterny came on in relief and pitched the rest of the game striking out 4 and giving up one run. Taranto was 3-for-4 at bat with a double and three runs scored, Schutz was 2-for-4 with two doubles, Georgakas was 3-for-4 with a triple McGregor was 3-for-4 and Yanish added a double.

The junior legion team also had a game last Thursday against Hudson in Hager City and lost 13-1 in five innings. Tyler Maxwell was the losing pitcher going into the four inning and striking out three. We were hurt by some errors and walks. Max Kuehn came on in relief and pitched the rest of the game. Ellsworth was led by Luke Sterny who went 2-3. Tyler Maxwell and Brady Sharon each had singles as well. We hit the ball pretty hard but it was always right at them.

We are off next week, and our next game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10th in Hager City at 6:30 against Chisago.
