HASTINGS - The body of a 65-year-old Welch man, Merriett M. Maul Jr., was recovered shortly before 9 p.m. Friday, June 29, near the public dock in Prescott

Maul had fallen into the St. Croix River from a courtesy dock three days previously – Tuesday, June 26. His body was found a short distance away. A citizen noticed the body and called authorities. When Maul fell into the water, he failed to surface.

“This appears to be a case where Mr. Maul assisted with docking his friend’s boat. He exited the boat onto the dock in order to secure the boat on the Prescott public dock,” said Prescott Police investigator Robert Funk. “After docking, Mr. Maul entered the water without being observed. Friends entered the water in an attempt to help Mr. Maul, but without success.”

A search began for Maul. Dive teams from Prescott Police Department and Washington and St. Croix counties assisted with the search effort. He was not wearing a life vest.

Maul is survived by his wife Christine; three daughters, Melisa (Paul) Medenwaldt, Tracy, and Amanda (Joel) Hadler, a grandson, Logan Hadler and three brothers. Maul was a former employee of Hastings School District 200.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at the Wise Family Funeral Home in Hastings.
