Wisconsin and four other states say they’ll continue to pursue a lawsuit demanding that the federal government keep the invasive Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes.
Congress addressed the matter last month, when it required the Army Corps of Engineers to finish a plan within 18 months to protect the Great Lakes from the bloated fish. The Corps was planning to complete its study by 2015 – and critics had accused the agency of dragging its feet on the matter. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says the lawsuit is still needed, because the congressional measure does not guarantee that Lake Michigan will be physically separated from the carp-infested Mississippi River basin.
A canal currently links the two, and the lawsuit seeks to shut down that canal. The case was recently assigned to a new federal judge. A trial date has not been set.
