The Ellsworth Lions Club’s 24th annual Family Fishing Derby was held June 3 at Nugget Lake and was enjoyed by many.
Trophies were handed out at the end of the derby in several categories. The derby is held for children 16 and under and had three categories. Taking first in the largest sunfish was Chloe Linder. First place in the largest crappie went to Parker Supri. There also was a category for smallest fish.
Catching fish was not the only excitement for the kids. Each child who fished received a door prize.
Concluding the day was the raffle drawing. The top prize was a canoe donated by Lion member Mike in memory of his wife, Verna Lifto, who was a long-serving teacher of the Ellsworth School District and who assisted with many Lion activities. It was named the “Verna Rosella.” The canoe was won by Claire Schulze.
Appreciation goes to area businesses for the donations of door prizes. Special appreciation goes to Mike Huppert of Fin Tech for donations of bait for all children fishing.
Next year’s derby will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013. This is the Wisconsin’s day of no fishing license required, so mark the calendar now.
