Brewers' Axford may lose closer role after another blown save
Wisconsin Sports-- John Axford might have lost his closer’s job last night, when the Milwaukee Brewers blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning and lost to Saint Louis 3-2 at Miller Park. It was Axford’s sixth blown save of the year, as his record dropped to 2-6. And unlike the recent past, Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke did not give Axford a vote of confidence this time.

Asked if he’s considering putting Francisco Rodriguez in the closer’s spot, Roenicke said quote, “We talk about it all the time. We talked about it just now.” And the skipper said there would be more discussions today. Matt Holliday tied last night’s game with a two-run single, and then Allen Craig singled home the winning run. Axford left to loud boos from the home crowd. Afterward, he said he couldn’t find a pitch that worked. Axford he remains confident he can fill the closer’s role – and hopes Roenicke will let him.
The loss ruined a fine performance by starter Mike Fiers, who threw seven scoreless innings. Cardinals’ starter Lance Lynn struck out 10 in seven innings, and Jason Motte got the final five outs for the win. He’s 4-3. Corey Hart homered and Ryan Braun had an RBI-double for Milwaukee, which lost only its fifth game in its last 13. The third-place Cardinals moved to four-and-a-half games ahead of the fourth-place Brewers, who remain eight in back of front-running Cincinnati.
The Brewers and Redbirds play again tonight in Milwaukee. Left-hander Randy Wolf will face Cardinals’ right-hander Joe Kelly.
