For the second time in three years, a Wisconsin native has been named the CEO of Yahoo. 37-year-old Marissa Mayer from Wausau resigned at Google yesterday after 13 years as a top executive.

She was Google’s first female engineer, and one of its first 20 employees. Now, the 37-year-old Mayer has accepted the challenge of turning around Yahoo, an Internet search and e-mail giant that’s been on the decline in the face of competition from Google and Facebook.

Mayer grew up in Wausau, and graduated from Wausau West High School. At Google, she played a major role in outmaneuvering Yahoo’s online search technology, and she’s credited for the success of G-Mail and Google News. Alma native Carol Bartz served for two-and-a-half years as Yahoo’s CEO until she was fired in 2009. Scott Thompson replaced her, but he stepped down in May after questions arose about his resume.
