TO THE EDITOR: At age 60, I am having an “identity crisis.”
I have to wonder “Am I a terrorist?” I never thought of myself in that context, until I read a recent report from the “experts” on the subject, The Department of Homeland Security.
Our president discontinued the use of the label “Islamic extremist” and his administration is now helping law enforcement identify the new enemy, the American terrorist.
Avoiding Islamic terrorism, the report fails completely to mention the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. The study focuses on Americans who share beliefs commonly held by a majority of conservatives and libertarians, and places them in the context of “radical extremist.”
The new report, “Hot Spots of Terrorism and Other Crimes in the United States, 1970 to 2008,” outlines instances of terrorism by groups of different viewpoints—right wing, left wing, religious, nationalistic and single issue.
The report uses definitions of “terrorists” taken from a report from 2011 called “Profiles of Perpetrators,” produced by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.
Terrorists now include:
—Americans who believe that their “way of life” is under attack.
—Americans who are “fiercely nationalistic” (as opposed to universal and international in orientation).
—People who consider themselves “anti-global” (presumably, concerned with the loss of sovereignty).
—Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority.”
—Americans who are “reverent of individual liberty.”
—People who believe in “conspiracy theories that involve grave threat to national sovereignty and/or personal liberty.”
I confess to being “reverent of individual liberty,” “suspicious of centralized federal government” and believe our “way of life is under attack.” Am I a terrorist, or is the government fundamentally changing to one that is not American?
Who cares where he was born? Obama doesn’t act American-like.
