ST. PAUL -- An old disease is making new waves across the U.S. and in Minnesota. With the nation on track to have its most whooping cough cases since 1959, Minnesota cases are also soaring into potential record territory.

Health officials say cases of pertussis are up 400 since June -- for a statewide total of 2,160 this year. That's a good chunk of the 18,000 cases reported nationwide.

Nine children have died from respiratory illness this year but officials report no deaths in Minnesota. State health officials urge pregnant women and people near infants to get a vaccination for whooping cough as soon as possible.
