Maple syrup producers in 14 Wisconsin counties, including Pierce County, will get help in covering their losses from this spring.
The USDA has declared natural disaster areas in much of the northern third of the Badger State, where syrup production was almost non-existent. Warm temperatures in February and early March caused a very limited run on sap in the producers’ maple trees.
The disaster declaration includes Barron, Door, Florence, Forest, Kewaunee, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marinette, Polk, Saint Croix, Shawano, and Vilas counties.
Twenty other counties which are next to those places will also get disaster assistance – and so will four connecting counties in Minnesota and four in Michigan.
