ELMWOOD—Ask Lynn Hartung and she’ll say only her interest in law enforcement could ever take priority over her love of animals.

On her own time, the Spring Valley police officer trains and uses her canine pets as therapy dogs. She and three-year-old “Sarge,” a black lab, have visited and become friends to the residents at nursing homes in Elmwood and Spring Valley. More recently, they’ve done likewise at similar facilities in this vicinity through Adoray Home Health and Hospice, based in Baldwin. In fact, they were featured in that agency’s latest newsletter.

“I’d known about the need for them,” Hartung of Elmwood said Wednesday about how she got started toward providing therapy dogs.
