(Minneapolis, MN) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves will officially introduce forward Brandon Roy at an afternoon news conference in Minneapolis today.
Team president of basketball operations David Kahn will be at the briefing at the Target Center, as well Roy agreed to terms to a deal earlier this month.
The U.S. men's basketball team, including Timberwolves star Kevin Love, continues play at the London Olympics this afternoon with a contest against Tunisia at 4:15 p.m., Minnesota time. Love scored 14 points in a win over France on Sunday. Kevin Durant scored 22 points to lead the Americans in their first game. The U.S. improved to 16-1 all-time in Olympic openers.
The U.S. women's basketball team smashed Angola 90-38 on Monday at the London Olympics. The U.S. is now 2-0 in pool play. Minnesota Lynx players Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, and Lindsay Whalen scored 13, 11, and nine points respectively. The American women will play 2-0 Turkey on Wednesday.
The U.S. women's volleyball team is in control of Group B after a 3-1 triumph over defending gold medal champion Brazil yesterday. Team USA is coached by University of Minnesota coach Hugh McCutcheon. And, former Golden Gopher Lindsay Berg is a key member of the team. THe Americans took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17 before dropping the third 22-25. The Americans then closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth set to move to 2-0. The U.S. goes up against reigning bronze medalist China tomorrow.
China and the United States share the lead in the overall medal count with 17 each. The Chinese have nine gold compared to the Americans count of five. The U.S. has won 12 of its 17 medals in swimming. France sits in third place in the medal count with seven. There are 15 medal events to be held on Tuesday.
The Minnesota Vikings waived defensive back Nicholas Taylor to kick-start a process which will eventually land him on injured reserve. Vikes head coach Leslie Frazier confirmed that Taylor underwent an MRI which revealed a damaged shoulder that is poised to keep the Florida International product out for a while. To fill the roster spot, Minnesota signed defensive back Chris Stroud, a rookie out of Webber International.
The University of Minnesota football team will open its fall practice period this weekend. Golden Gopher head coach Jerry Kill will put his younger players through a Saturday workout before everyone starts training camp on Sunday. Minnesota will conduct 23 fall practices leading up to the season opener on August 30th at UNLV. The home opener for the Gophers is September 9th against New Hampshire at TCF Stadium.
Freshly-planted trees now line the spot outside Beaver Stadium where Joe Paterno's statue previously stood. According to the "Centre Daily Times," the trees were planted over the weekend. Workers removed the seven-foot statue of the late football coach the weekend before. That decision came after the Freeh Report determined Paterno helped cover up allegations of child sex abuse against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who was found guilty last month. Penn State does not play Minnesota in football this fall.
The PGA Champions Tour 3M Championship is set for this weekend at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine. The 54-hole event tees off on Friday, with rounds scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, as well. Players will be given course time today for practice. Alexandria's Tom Lehman and defending tourney champion Jay Haas headline a field of golfers set to begin competition on Friday morning.
