Police investigating whether the Ball attack was retaliation

MADISON - UNiversity of Wisconsin running back Montee Ball denies a report that he and several teammates got into a fight recently, and Wednesday’s attack on him was in retaliation.
The entertainment Web site TMZ said Madison Police received a tip about the earlier fight. Police say they have no knowledge of such an incident, but spokesman Howard Payne said detectives are checking out a variety of leads and rumors – including possible retaliation. Police are not ruling it out. But Payne says officers still have no proof that the attack on Ball was provoked or planned. The Heisman Trophy candidate from a year ago suffered a concussion and facial injuries when five men pushed him to the ground and kicked him around 2:15 Wednesday morning on a UW campus street. Ball, a senior, is expected to miss part of the Badgers’ preseason camp that begins next week. Coach Bret Bielema hopes his star rusher will be able to practice the week before Wisconsin’s opening game against Northern Iowa on September first in Madison.

Wisconsin is ranked 12th in the preseason coaches’ poll from USA Today. The Badgers were 11th in the final poll in January, after they went 11-3 with their second straight loss in the Rose Bowl.

Meanwhile, Michigan high school quarterback Chance Stewart has given a verbal commitment to the Badgers for the 2014 season. Stewart will be a junior this fall in Sturgis, Michigan. He passed for over 1,300 yards as a sophomore, with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
