Minnesota Sports Briefs: Love scores 13 in U.S. hoops win over Argentina

LONDON -- The United States men's basketball team finished group play with a perfect record.
Team USA used a 42-point third quarter to cruise to a 126-97 win over Argentina in its final preliminary contest at the London Olympics. Wolves forward Kevin Love scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 15-minutes of action as the Americans finished atop Group A action at 5-0. They square off against Australia in an elimination game tomorrow.

A trio of Lynx and the U.S. women's basketball team are back on the court today as they clash with Canada in an elimination game at the Olympics. Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen helped Team USA finish a perfect 5-0 in preliminary Group A action. They're coming off a 114-66 rout of China on Sunday. In that win, the Americans tied the record for most points in a women's Olympic game and also set the record for most assists.

The St. Paul Saints got edged on the bottom of Lake Michigan, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Just-signed Kyle Hurst gave up both runs in four innings of work and the Saints' bats never got untracked. St. Paul is 39-35 this season -- 10 games behind division leader Fargo-Moorhead.

The son of Twins hitting coach Joe Vavra is having a great season had a big night in Willmar on Monday. Tanner Vavra was named Player of the Night in the Northwoods League as he went 3-for-5, knocking in four runs and scoring twice as the Alexandria Beetles beat the Willmar Stingers 10-7. Vavra's accomplishment is amazing since he lost vision in one of his eyes when he was very young. Vavra, who goes to school at Valparaiso, leads the league with a .385 average.
