STILLWATER -- There's no word yet when a lake beach in Washington County will reopen following the death of a nine-year-old boy from a rare form of meningitis.
Officials in Stillwater believe the boy died after contracting a rare parasitic brain infection during a recent swim at Lily Lake. Trisha Robinson with the state Health Department says an amoeba that lives in very warm water can transmit menigitis if it gets into a swimmer's nose.
Swimmers' chances of contracting of the rare but almost always fatal brain infection are increasing as water temperatures go up in Minnesota's lakes and rivers.
