USDA trying to cut red tape on drought aid

WASHINGTON D.C. - The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it is trying to cut through the red tape to help drought-stricken farmers in Wisconsin and the rest of the Midwest.

The USDA says Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is committed to a streamlining of the process which gets federal assistance to farmers. Changes made last month will reportedly reduce the processing time for applications in most counties by 40 percent, and at the same time reduce the interest rate for emergency loans.

A spokesperson for the federal agency made several stops yesterday in southern Wisconsin, an area hurt badly by the lack of rainfall.
